Change is certain, but progress is only optional.
Business is challenging. Change can always be counted on. A long-time client departing, a lost sale without explanation, or a valued employee jumping ship, change is a certainty, progress however is not a guarantee by any stretch. Successfully leading a team through the chaos of change requires intentionality and strategic actions. Here are seven steps to help your team not just navigate but thrive in times of change.
1. How is success defined?
THINKING RIGHT to LEFT
The first step to accelerating change is defining what success looks like. By thinking from right to left, envision the end state and work backward to identify the necessary steps to get there. Clearly articulate what success means for your team and ensure everyone understands and is aligned with this vision.
2. Align Behaviors with Outcomes
To achieve the desired outcomes, it is crucial to align team behaviors with these goals. This alignment involves setting clear expectations and providing the necessary tools and resources to support these behaviors. Foster an environment where the desired behaviors are recognized and rewarded.
3. What does “good” look like?
Instill Productive Accountability in Yourself
Define what “good” looks like for your team. Set benchmarks and standards that exemplify excellence. By instilling productive accountability in yourself, you set an example for your team to follow. Hold yourself and your team to high standards and be clear about the expectations.
4. Do rewards, recognition, and consequences align?
Reinforce with Measurement
Ensure that your rewards, recognition, and consequences are in line with the behaviors and outcomes you want to achieve. Regularly measure performance and provide feedback. Reinforcement through consistent and fair recognition and consequences helps drive the right behaviors.
5. What needs to change with your personal Metrics, Policies, and Processes (MPP)?
Team Focus
Evaluate and adjust your metrics, policies, and processes to support the desired change. Identify what is working and what is not. Make the necessary adjustments to ensure that your MPPs are aligned with the team’s goals and facilitate the desired outcomes.
6. Are You Prepared to Win?
Preparation is key to success. Ensure that you and your team are equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to succeed. This preparation includes training, development, and providing a supportive environment where the team feels confident and capable of achieving the desired change.
7. Repetition and Consistency
Repetition and consistency are crucial in driving lasting change. Consistently communicate the vision, reinforce the desired behaviors, and celebrate successes. Repetition helps solidify new habits and ensures that the team stays focused on the goals.
By following these seven steps, you can accelerate change within your team and ensure that progress is not only achieved but sustained. Change is inevitable, but with the right strategies, you can lead your team to success.
